7 Things You Probably Didn’t Know
#1. It’s One of the Parents of Cabernet Sauvignon
Sauvignon Blanc + Cabernet Franc = Cabernet Sauvignon. Not bad for a “light summer white,” right?
#2. The Name Means “Wild White”
From sauvage (wild) and blanc (white), it’s a nod to its early, uncultivated origins.
#3 That “Green” Aroma Is Science
Those grassy, herbal notes come from compounds called methoxypyrazines, which are more common in cooler climates like the Loire Valley.
#4. New Zealand Made It Famous (But Didn’t Invent It)
France has been growing Sauvignon Blanc for centuries, but Marlborough just turned the volume way up.
#5. Some Sauvignon Blanc Can Age Beautifully
While most are meant to be drunk young, top examples (especially from France) can develop:
- Honey
- Nuts
- Waxy texture
#6. It’s a Terroir Translator
Few grapes reflect place as clearly as Sauvignon Blanc:
- France: mineral, restrained
- New Zealand: bold, tropical
- California: ripe, rounded
#7. It’s a Food Pairing Superstar
Sauvignon Blanc pairs especially well with:
- Goat cheese
- Herbs
- Seafood
- Even tricky vegetables like asparagus

July Wine Circle
At our July Wine Circle focused on Sauvignon Blanc, you can put your Sauvignon Blanc knowledge—and your palate—to the test. Join us on Thursday, July 9, from 6:00-7:30 pm at a Wilmington location TBD.
The first Thursday of each month (well, this month it’s the second Thursday), up to 8 people get together to enjoy each other’s company as we taste wine focused on a particular varietal, wine style or wine region. There’s no fee to participate in these gatherings. Each month is hosted by a different person who is only responsible for providing glasses and a festive tasting atmosphere. Each participant brings a bottle of wine and a paired snack to share that fits the month’s theme.
