WINE OF THE MONTH
San Gregorio Tempranillo Calatayud 2022
Last evening, the Wilmington Wine Circle gathered once again to explore the vibrant and diverse wines of Spain. From the crisp Atlantic influence of Galicia to the bold, sun-drenched reds of Castilla y León, our April Wine Circle offered a tour across some of Spain’s most celebrated wine regions.
The Lineup

Our tasting featured six distinctive wines, each thoughtfully paired with equally delicious dishes:
- Fillaboa Albariño, Rías Baixas 2024
- Ferratus Rosado, Ribera del Duero 2024
- Marqués de Cáceres Rioja Crianza 2021
- Coto de Hayas Garnacha Centenaria, Campo de Borja 2022
- San Gregorio Tempranillo, Calatayud 2022
- Enebral Tinta de Toro, Toro 2022
Each wine brought its own personality to the table, from the zesty, saline freshness of Albariño to the structured, powerful intensity of Toro. The pairings elevated the experience even further, highlighting how beautifully Spanish wines shine alongside food. And I personally discovered how well the Ferratus Rosado actually paired with meatballs!
And the Favorite Is…
At the end of the evening, we all cast our votes for our favorite wine—and the clear standout was the San Gregorio Tempranillo Calatayud 2022!
This result speaks volumes about the growing appreciation for wines from Calatayud, where old vines and high-altitude vineyards produce reds of both concentration and freshness.
Here are my tasting notes: The San Gregorio Tempranillo Calatayud 2022 is a very good quality wine, showing a youthful medium ruby color with a medium+ intensity nose of ripe cherry, blackberry, and plum layered with subtle dried herbs, baking spice, and a touch of vanilla. On the palate, it is dry with medium+ acidity, smooth medium tannins, and a medium+ body, offering juicy dark fruit flavors with hints of licorice and faint minerality. The wine finishes medium+ in length, with lingering notes of dark fruit and baking spices.
Congratulations to the San Gregorio for taking the top spot this month, and thank you to to everyone who brought bottles, food, curiosity, and great conversation! I’m already dreaming of our next Wine Circle adventure.
“The best wines are the ones we drink with friends.”
May Wine Circle
At our upcoming May Wine Circle, we’ll explore the exciting world of RIESLINGS that highlight just how diverse and exciting this grape can be. Some will be bright and dry, others may show a touch of sweetness, but all of them will help you discover why Riesling might just become your new favorite grape!
So come join us on Thursday, May 7, from 6:00-7:30 pm at a Wilmington location TBD.
The first Thursday of each month, up to 8 people get together to enjoy each other’s company as we taste wine focused on a particular varietal, wine style or wine region. There’s no fee to participate in these gatherings. Each month is hosted by a different person who is only responsible for providing glasses and a festive tasting atmosphere. Each participant brings a bottle of wine and a paired snack to share that fits the month’s theme.
