If you’ve ever tasted a wine and thought, “Wow… what is going on here?” There’s a good chance Syrah was involved.

Syrah—called Shiraz in Australia and a few other places —is one of the most expressive and exciting grapes in the wine world. It’s bold without being one-note, savory without being heavy, and endlessly rewarding for anyone who likes to taste with curiosity.

This is a grape that wants you to slow down, swirl, sniff, and ask questions. What am I smelling? What am I tasting? Typical Syrah aromas and flavors include:

  • Blackberry and black cherry
  • Blueberry
  • Black pepper
  • Olive tapenade
  • Violet
  • Smoke or cured meat

Depending on where it’s grown and how it’s made, Syrah can be fresh and peppery or ripe and plush, and sometimes both at the same time.

March Wine Circle

Syrah is a dream grape for our March Wine Circle because it gives us a lot to discover:

  • Bold aromas that jump out of the glass
  • A balance of fruit and savory elements
  • Structure you can actually feel (tannin + acidity)
  • Layers that evolve as the wine opens up

It’s a grape that rewards attention. The second sniff is better than the first. The second sip reveals something new. I can’t wait to explore this exciting grape with you on March 5!
